“Coal is the single greatest threat to civilization and all life on our planet,” according to James Hansen, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Why? And what’s our connection?
This workshop will explore the Northwest’s intimate connection to coal. The session will demonstrate ways to engage students in thinking about the global impact of the coal export proposals that, if approved, could lead to the transport of 150 million tons of coal through Oregon and Washington for shipment to Asia. This could have a huge negative impact on the climate and on human health. It’s a grim subject, but our teaching about it can be lively and hopeful.
This workshop is designed for middle and secondary teachers as well as community members.

Credit Option: This workshop is part of the “Rethinking Schools Series”. Each workshop in the Sustainability Series can be taken individually or in sequence, with the option to purchase 1 semester hour of continuing education credit after completing all 5 in the series. Registration for credit will occur at the last workshop in this series.

About the Instructor
Bill Bigelow taught high school social studies in Portland, Ore. for almost 30 years. He is the curriculum editor of Rethinking Schools and the co-director of the Zinn Education Project. This project offers free materials to teach people’s history and an “If We Knew Our History” article series. Bigelow is author or co-editor of numerous books, including A People’s History for the Classroom and The Line Between Us: Teaching About the Border and Mexican Immigration.
