Writing Your Way! Incoming Grades 6-9

Welcome, Young Writers!

Join us for an exciting time of writing, talking, reading—and more writing!

In these online writing workshops, students will turn their digital notebooks to a new page. They will locate the stories they carry, take risks in writing, learn to turn memory into fiction, fiction into poetry. They will write to a wide variety of prompts while honing their writing skills through craft lessons that build both language dexterity and knowledge of genres.

Students will join an OWP writing instructor with other students in their age group. After reading and discussing prompts, students will write online. During the class time, learners will also use digital video conferencing to share their writing with other students and the instructor to get live feedback and support in their writing.

Groups will be separated by incoming grades 6 & 7, and incoming grades 8 & 9.

About the Instructors

All Oregon Writing Project instructors have completed an intensive four-week summer institute on the teaching of writing. In addition, all have participated in a year-long, follow-up class, as well as a professional development workshop series devoted to creating curriculum for Writing Your Way. These courses focus on learning effective teaching strategies, prompts, and pacing to implement in middle school classrooms. These educators also appreciate the humor, honesty, and energy of grade 6-9 students.

Anabel Muñana is a 6th grade ELA and Spanish Immersion Teacher at Beaumont Middle School in Portland, Oregon. She is currently in her 13th year of teaching and has been a part of OWP since 2014. When she is not teaching or writing, you can find her reading, traveling, skiing, or spending time with her French Bulldog, Pepita.

The Oregon Writing Project (OWP), is a collaboration program between Lewis & Clark and metropolitan or rural area schools and districts, and offers programs designed to improve the writing of Oregon’s K-12 students and teachers.
