Teaching With Purpose Leadership Institute

The Teaching With Purpose Leadership Institute is designed to facilitate leadership development to implement culturally responsive practices, align with Oregon’s equity laws, including but not limited to Senate Bill 103, Senate Bill 739, HB 2192, Senate Bill 755, and OEIBs’ State Equity Lens. Participating teams will work to assess their district’s current equity policy context, learn new pedagogical and organizational practices, develop a coherent theory of action for culturally responsive policy and practice, and develop a strategic implementation plan to meet ambitious equity goals. The Leadership Institute is supported by a grant from the Oregon Department of Education.

Leadership Institute Session Structure and Schedule

Each Leadership Institute session will meet on the first Thursday of the month, November 2014-May 2015 from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.  A light breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack will be provided.

Session Materials

Session facilitators will plan the content of each session based on the needs and interests of the participating teams. Facilitation aims to be responsive to the learning that emerges in each session. Participants will need to print and bring copies of materials to the session, or bring a laptop or other electronic device to access them. Hard copies of the materials will not be available.

District Leadership Team Participation Expectations

Districts can bring up to ten consistently attending team members. Teams should include at least one district office leader, school level leaders, an association leader, a teacher leader, a school board member, and when possible, a student leader and a community leader. In short, districts should assemble the necessary team to make decisions and act on them. Team members are expected to attend each session. Superintendents are encouraged to participate as team members. Districts will not be able to participate without the commitment of the superintendent. While there is a time commitment required, we understand that life happens, and will work with team members who develop infrequent and unavoidable scheduling conflicts to continue their participation.

Application and Graduate Credit Information

There is no charge for participation in the Leadership Institute, however participants must apply and be accepted. The application window for the 2014-2015 cycle is now closed.

Graduate degree-applicable or a continuing education credit will be offered from the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling.
