April 27Jesse Caldwell is the recipient of this year’s Outstanding Law Student Award, which is given to a law student who has excelled at leadership and service this year.

April 23When Lewis & Clark undergrads choose to pay the voluntary student “green fee,” the money goes into a fund that allows the college to buy renewable energy certificates and promote sustainability. The Renewable Energy Fee Fund Committee, comprised of students, is responsible for choosing the energy certificates, and awarding grants for student projects, internships, and research.

November 2As sustainability becomes increasingly relevant in all academic and professional arenas, a new course offered in conjunction with the Bates Center for Entrepreneurship and Leadership gives students of any major an introduction to the challenges of running a sustainable business and the laws and technicalities of sustainability in the business world.

October 17Current discourse is marked with a boundary-oriented mentality, and animosity on both sides prevents meaningful progress. Taking place October 23 through October 24, the 21st Environmental Affairs Symposium hopes to change that narrative. To facilitate this conversation, race relations expert Daryl Davis will speak on his experience engaging with members of the Ku Klux Klan and how he finds common ground with people of all backgrounds and opinions.

In the summer of 2017, Ary Hashim BA ’20 put Lewis & Clark’s Renewable Energy Fee Fund to work in a rural village in Malaysia. He returned to Malaysia this past summer to double the number of lights and solar panels, and expand to an additional village in the area. For him, environmental activism complements the degree he’s pursuing in economics.

August 22The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) has recognized Lewis & Clark as a top performer in its 2018 Sustainable Campus Index, making L&C the only baccalaureate institution west of the Mississippi to make the top 10. Lewis & Clark placed second nationally in the category of Investment and Finance.

November 27On behalf of Wild Fish Conservancy, on Monday, November 13th, Earthrise filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Washington against Cooke Aquaculture for Clean Water Act violations related to the near-complete structural failure of its Atlantic salmon farming facility in Deepwater Bay off of Cypress Island in late August.

They call themselves Team Eugene and they’ve dubbed their journey the Bike to Eugene Challenge.

November 5In February 2018, Lewis & Clark’s trustees voted unanimously to divest from fossil fuel holdings in the endowment.
