    Shahzeb Jillani has established a reputation as a versatile journalist through his international reporting on issues ranging from the environment to politics. As a student, Jillani, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international affairs, was a resident assistant, leader in student government, member of student media groups, and participant in the international student speakers’ bureau.



  • Valerie Schmidt BA ’94 was elected president of the Organization of Women Leaders, which promotes networking and support among women in decision-making positions in many industries and careers.

  • John A. Schifino JD ’94, a partner in the Tampa offices of Burr & Forman LLP, was recently sworn in as president of the Hillsborough County Bar Association (HCBA). Schifino has served on the HCBA board of directors since 2011. He has been on the executive committee of the HCBA’s 600-member trial and litigation section since 2010, and chaired the section in 2015–2016.

  • Scott Shapiro JD ’94 was named a 2018 Top Lawyer by Sacramento Magazine and will be featured in the August issue. Shapiro is a managing partner at Downey Brand LLP in Sacramento, California.

  • David deGraw BA ’94 was featured on Bloomberg News’ Bloomberg Daybreak: Asia on December 20, 2017. He discussed the impact of MiFID2 regulation and the usage of artificial intelligence and machine learning for algorithmic trading of equities. 

  • Eileen Eakins JD ’94 marks the 12th anniversary of her solo law practice in April 2018. Her firm represents more than 80 local government clients, including counties, cities, and special service districts. Through the Special Districts Association of Oregon and other sponsors, Eakins also conducts frequent training sessions for elected officials and public employees on the laws that apply to local governments in Oregon.

  • Scott Shapiro JD ’94 was a Best of the Bar honoree in 2017 and was named in the 2018 issue of Best Lawyers in America magazine. Shapiro is a managing partner at Downey Brand LLP in Sacramento, California.

  • Was named in the 2017 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the category of medical malpractice law—defendants.

  • Was named president of the board of directors of the Resource Development Council (RDC) of Alaska for the 2016–2017 term. RDC is a statewide business association of individuals and companies from Alaska’s oil and gas, mining, forest products, tourism, and fisheries industries. Fjelstad is a partner in Perkins Coie’s environment, energy, and resources practice and managing partner of the firm’s Anchorage office.

  • Liz Dean B.A. is working in the casting department of the TNT television show Major Crimes. Ever Carradine B.A. ’96 plays the role of Sharon Beck on the same show.

  • Susan Francois B.A. has been elected to a six-year term as a member of the leadership team of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, an international community of Catholic Sisters with members in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Haiti.

  • Peter Grube B.A. was appointed to the board of the City Club of Central Oregon.

  • Valerie Schmidt B.A. received the Business Woman of the Year award from the Organization of Women Leaders, a group of women executives from Hawaii’s businesses and government agencies.

  • Kimberlee Stafford BS ’94, JD ’05 and Vanessa Usui JD ’05, June 21, 2015, on their front lawn along the North Portland Sunday Parkways route.   • Became the chair of Sarcos LC, a leading global robotics and sensor company formerly known as Raytheon Sarcos, the robotics division of the Raytheon Company. Wolff is responsible for overseeing the direction of the company and engaging with strategic partners, customers, and investors. He was CEO, president, and chair of Pendrell Corporation from 2009 to 2014. During his tenure at Pendrell, Wolff navigated a turnaround of the company by facilitating a resolution to a complex subsidiary bankruptcy and creating more than $500 million in value for equity holders by eliminating more than $1.5 billion of consolidated debt.

  • Was named in 2015 Best Lawyers for his work in medical malpractice law.

  • Scott Shapiro JD ’94 was elected managing partner at Downey Brand, where he focuses on the internal operations of the firm. Shapiro is known for his expertise in flood protection improvement projects throughout California’s Central Valley.

  • Moved his law practice, Milby Attorneys & Counselors, to 1909 Woodall Rogers, Suite 500, Dallas, Texas 75201. He focuses on business law, including entity formation, business negotiations and contract drafting, and trial work arising out of business disputes.

  • Was named manager in the geosciences group at ENVIRON in Newark, New Jersey. Zdenek has over nine years of experience in the environmental science and engineering fields, including environmental compliance, due diligence, risk assessment, site assessment, investigation and remediation, environmental health and safety (EHS), permitting and compliance, solid and hazardous waste management, federal and state land use permitting, and development of budgets and remediation cost estimates. She also has 10 years of experience as an attorney in several areas of practice, including multistate environmental litigation. Zdenek has significant experience in multimedia compliance audits, Phase I environmental site assessments, remediation data evaluation, sampling plan development, field coordination, project coordination, proposal preparation, and budget review and analysis.
