Becky B. Miller

Becky Miller has been a special educator serving K-12 students, teachers, and families for over 35 years. Her career began as a general education teacher and then a special education high school resource teacher, before she moved into administration as a district program inclusion specialist, teacher on special assignment, and a faculty member for Northern Arizona University. As program director, Becky facilitated a field-based collaboration in special and general education between Northern Arizona University and Arizona rural school districts with a focus on training teachers to serve children with high-incidence disabilities from Native American (Navajo and Hopi) and Mexican-American backgrounds in the border areas of Southwest Arizona.

Before coming to Lewis & Clark College, Becky Miller was an instructor, Learning Disability Coordinator and pre-service teaching director in the special education departments at the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Pacific, San Joaquin Delta College and Portland State University. As part of her partnership work as a consultant and trainer, Becky led district teams in a trainer of trainer’s model for best practices in supporting special education students in the rigor of new state standards, innovations and technology solutions to support struggling learners and the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework.

As director of the Special Education Endorsement Program at Lewis & Clark, Becky is dedicated to establishing district affiliated partnerships in response to the growing need of skilled special educators in culturally diverse classrooms. She is also committed to making sure the teacher preparation program emphasizes inquiry into teaching and critical reflection in practice.

Personal Statement

“As I work with all teachers, I remain awestruck by their energy, empathy, and excitement. Accept every student as they are. Students come to us with packages and baggage. Open and unpack slowly and gently, with kindness, respect, and understanding. Building a relationship with a student takes time and patience—allow it to happen organically. If you push it, shove it, or force it, you’ll have to start all over and it may or may not bloom.” (Council for Exceptional Child, 2016)

K-12 formative assessment tools, early literacy support and intervention, dyslexia screening and implementation strategies, data collecting and IEP planning, multi-tiered instructional service delivery models, classroom-based interventions, culturally sensitive diagnosis.
