Rebecca Critser

Postdoctoral Fellow, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
Baltimore, Maryland
LLM ’22

Rebecca’s passion for nonhuman animals has been a lifelong pursuit. As a Brooks Institute for Animal Rights Law & Policy Scholarship recipient, she is excited to have arrived at the Animal Law LLM program, where she hopes to combine her background in biotechnology and ethics to focus on the use of animals in laboratories. Prior to attending law school, Rebecca graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Behavior. She went on to work for a biotechnology company in quality assurance. During her time in law school, she focused on health law and simultaneously pursued her masters in bioethics. After law school, she advocated for access to gender-affirming care for transgender clients and completed a one-year medical ethics fellowship at the Charles Warren Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics.

Currently, Rebecca serves on the Indiana State Bar Association Animal Law Committee, which endeavors to promote the wellbeing of nonhuman animals throughout Indiana, and on the board of Phinney’s, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit organization that helps low-income individuals maintain the wellbeing of their pets. She is a member of the ABA Animal Law International and Science & Technology subcommittees and a member of Lewis & Clark’s Animal Law Review.

“I reject the presumption that humans are inherently better or more valuable than any other animal. Through legal reform and advocacy, I hope to help make the world a safer place for all nonhuman animals.”
