Shin-young transferred from Seoul National University in South Korea to the Manhattan School of Music in 1996, where she studied with Sylvia Rosenberg and earned both her B.M and M.M. She later completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree program at Indiana University as a student of Miriam Fried. Her dissertation is a survey of string quartets by minor composers of the Classical period.
She has been a member of the Arnica String Quartet in Portland since 2005, and is a founding member of the string quartet Mousai Remix since 2011.
Her interest in chamber music is also in evidence by her performances at the Sarasota Music Festival, the Tanglewood Music Center, and the Taos School of Music, and she also is the recipient of The Kutner String Quartet Award.
She has been a member of the Oregon Symphony since 2004 and served as an Acting Assistant Concertmaster from September 2016 through December 2018. Addition to the Oregon Symphony, she has been a member of the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra and the Sunriver Music Festival Orchestra. She has also participated in the New York String Seminar, the Aspen Music Festival, the Pacific Music Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Festival.
She has performed solo recitals in Indiana, New York, Portland and South Korea, and she has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in South Korea.
Shin-young has been coached by Atar Arad, James Buswell, Isidore Cohen, Glenn Dicterow, Alexander Kerr, Peter Salaf, János Starker, Sheryl Staples, Alan de Veritch, Zvi Zeitlin, and members of the Orion, Juilliard, Chicago, and Takács quartets.
