Dr. Robert Unzueta is an Assistant Professor of Education in the Department of Teacher Education at Lewis and Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling. In addition to working with pre-service teachers, he also teaches social foundations courses on the undergraduate campus.

Robert began his work in education as an instructor at a community college working with men and women whom been formally incarcerated. His work focused on collaborative efforts at helping student re-enter the educational pipeline to achieve their own goals and become agents of change in their communities. Robert has continued to work with historically under-represented students whom have been systemically pushed out of the educational pipeline to build sustainable pathways for their re-entry and success.

Before coming to Lewis & Clark, Robert was an instructor at Skagit Valley College in Ethnic Studies and Sociology. Robert worked with first generation students of color to create transfer pathways and foster their leadership skills through transformative activism to create change.

Personal Statement

I propose that the schools are not broken but function as they are designed, which continue to exacerbate the social inequalities our society has been founded on. Understanding this I am not looking to reform the system but develop critical awareness of how we continue to perpetuate these inequalities in our practices so that we begin to change ourselves, the culture of our classrooms, our relationship with students, and the communities we work for. Through changing ourselves we can create new possibilities that can change our classroom, the school, the district, the state, the nation, and possibly the world.

Current Research

My current research is interested in student lead activism for change through Critical Participatory Action Research. I am interesting in stakeholders identifying the most pressing social injustices they face in their schools and collectively developing sustainable solutions.
