Margo Gaillard ’24 welcomes you to campus for the fall term

Originally from Bozeman, Montana, Margo graduated this past spring with a degree in Environmental Studies. At LC Margo also spent many hours in the studio arts and ultimately completed a thesis merging the two fields, in which art was perceived as a creative means of reckoning with and reconciling environmental intervention.

About their banner design, Margo shared:

The image of the girl in the library is based on the iconic “lofi study girl” because I often pretended to be her while studying in those exact chairs; I used that romanticized imagery to motivate myself to study when I didn’t want to. I also always found some perspective in the beauty of the trees outside the windows in the silent study sections.

The image of the gazebo is in memory/honor of the fun times I have had under those structures and how I would always see people sitting in them (rain or shine) studying, reading, eating, talking with friends, and –my favorite– playing guitar. I always enjoyed walking under the gazebos and hearing little bits of someone’s conversation or tune. I also had my first Bon lunch (out of a to-go box because it was 2020) with my roommate under the North gazebo and they asked someone to join us; the three of us ended up as besties for quite awhile and I was very grateful to my roommate for having been braver than myself in reaching out to someone new.

Since graduation Margo has been working as a kayak guide on the Willamette River and as a warehouse worker for College Outdoors and someday hopes to have their own art studio.

Margo is also the artist behind the iconic “mossy cat” sticker for Moss Appreciation Week 2024.

The banners will remain up through the month of October, and you can collect a bookmark featuring Margo’s design at the Watzek Service Desk throughout this coming academic year.
