TransActive Update: August 2022

The TransActive Gender Project team remains fully engaged throughout the year (including Summer) delivering professional development training to schools, agencies, and other organizations—as well as child, youth, and family support through online and (once again!) in-person group settings. We’re expanding our advocacy services to include providing gender diversity expert witness testimony in parenting time and child custody cases.

So many of us have deep feelings about the rising tide of anti-transgender disinformation and hate in many states and communities, and that is why I’m particularly thrilled to be working every day on the launch of our fully-online, first-in-the-nation, Gender Diversity in Children and Youth Certificate Program—beginning in October!

The first program cohort is currently forming. We have been hearing from prospective students throughout Oregon and from as far away as Bahrain! TransActive, the Center for Community Engagement, and Lewis & Clark Graduate School are honored to be offering this continuing education certificate program, and we look forward to sharing more with you as we move into the fall.

Thank you for your continued, and unwavering support and interest in the work of TransActive!

Jenn Burleton,
Program Director, TransActive Gender Project

Gender Diversity Certificate Now Fully Online

The Gender Diversity in Children and Youth certificate program at Lewis & Clark Graduate School is a nine-month online continuing education program that will help prepare individuals working in PK-12 education and other youth serving roles to better support the needs of trans-spectrum children, youth, and adults. The 2022 cohort begins this October, and applications are open now. Attend a virtual info session on August 24 to learn more.

New & Noteworthy

TransActive at Portland Pride!
We were so thrilled to be back in-person at the Pride festival this year! We were joined by 25 youth volunteers and parents who helped us construct our float for the Saturday parade. It was our first year gifting TransActive t-shirts to donors, which were a big hit with festival go-ers. Thanks to all who stopped by the booth to say hello, including Jessie, who was profiled in a recent article by Time Magazine!

Resources and Self Advocacy Webpage
Our website is growing! We recently added a Resources and Self Advocacy portal to our website intended to empower those who are looking for transgender/gender diverse friendly care providers for both mental and/or physical needs (both nationwide and local to Oregon), legal services, and other literary resources for both parents and youth. Check it out here

Family and Youth Support Groups
We look forward to resuming in-person support groups at the end of August!
TransActive will continue to offer online support groups indefinitely to maintain accessibility. Learn more about both options here
