#lc_blmatschool2020: Teacher ed students take part in Black Lives Matter at School week of action

The Black Lives Matter at School week of action is taking place February 3-7.

Lewis & Clark’s teacher education candidates have launched #lc_blmatschool2020 in order to support and have a presence throughout the Black Lives Matter at School week of action while chronicling their related activism and teaching experiences. Black Lives Matter at School is aligned to 4 demands and 13 principles including:

1. End “zero tolerance” discipline, and implement restorative justice

2. Hire more black teachers

3. Mandate black history and ethnic studies in K-12 curriculum

4. Fund counselors not cops

It will take place February 3-7.

“We are starting with the social media campaign this year as a way to promote the week of action and next year we are going to organize on campus activities,” says Alisun Thompson, an assistant professor in the teacher education department. “We are hoping that our preservice teachers will engage in teaching and/or activism (find out what is happening in Portland during the week) and post it on Instagram with the hashtag #lc_blmatschool2020.”

Three winners will be selected to win books by and about Black authors.
