Welcome, Future Pioneers!

Incoming members of the Class of 2022 share why they chose Lewis & Clark.

Lewis & Clark students represent the next generation of global thinkers and leaders. No one student here is typical, so we asked nine future Pioneers to tell us their stories and share why they will be attending Lewis & Clark this fall. Welcome to the Class of 2022!

What three words would you use to describe L&C?
Lush, sustainable, comfortable

Why did you choose Lewis & Clark?
I knew Lewis & Clark was where I wanted to study after visiting. It really is a beautiful campus, and just minutes away from an amazing city. I also got a strong sense that the students genuinely care about using their education to help their communities. It also makes me feel good to know that the school is committed to composting and recycling

Why did you choose Lewis & Clark?
When I arrived on campus, I got a good vibe from the atmosphere and the people. I was most impressed with Pamplin Sports Center and the open feel of the campus. I love the outdoors so it felt like a perfect match. I’m super excited to play football at Lewis & Clark next fall!

Inclusive, exploratory, flexible

Why did you choose Lewis & Clark?
I chose Lewis & Clark because of its amazing study abroad opportunities and proximity to Portland. I have been interested in Japanese culture since the fifth grade, and I knew I wanted to be part of an academic community that supports and helps me realize my passions. Lewis & Clark also fosters an international community with diverse opinions and backgrounds. I was raised in the South, but have also lived abroad and learned to understand the value of diversity.

Growing up as a city kid, I’m super excited to be a part of the College Outdoors program. I can’t wait to backpack the Wallowas with my classmates and learn to identify edible mushrooms at one of the Mushroom Clinics, which were recommended to me by both students and faculty during my visit.

Did you visit campus? If so, what impressed you the most?
The beauty of the campus immediately swept me off my feet, but the moment I chose to apply early decision was in the classroom. While observing a student debate during an Introduction to International Relations class, I was floored by each student’s ability to present their ideas intelligently, authentically, and respectfully. Furthermore, the professor knew everyone’s names, where they were from, and clearly had a connection with all the students.

Why did you choose Lewis & Clark?
I’m a passionate person, and someone who seeks to do good in this world. From the second I stepped on campus, I knew that Lewis & Clark was able to give me the opportunity to pursue my passions. I stand in the face of injustice, and I want to be an advocate for others who cannot advocate for themselves, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. I know that Lewis & Clark will give me the experiences I need to hone my leadership skills and became a better ally.

What three words would you use to describe L&C?
Vibrant, friendly, breathtaking

Did you visit campus? If so, what impressed you the most?
I chose Lewis & Clark when I was on a trip to Oregon for basketball, and, to be honest, I was not expecting the amazing place I found. When I walked onto campus I immediately fell in love with its atmosphere. The people, the teachers, and the athletic program were everything I was looking for.

I also have a special connection to the school mascot, Pio. My family and I have a great love for Newfoundlands. A big member of my family, literally, was our dog Tank. The giant, slobbery, sweet Newfoundland was a part of our family for 10 years and passed away just before my visit to Lewis & Clark. When I saw the mascot I knew it was a sign that this was the right place for me.
