This fall, Lewis & Clark will unveil a new Office of Sustainability to be housed in the Templeton Student Center.
After six years in her current position, Director of Sustainability Amy Dvorak will transition from working in Facilities Services to managing the new office. Effective September 1, she began her new position which reports directly to Vice President for Business and Finance and Treasurer Alan Finn.
“Sustainability is about more than simply environmental issues,” Finn said. “Rather, it is also about sustaining the institution, its resources, and most importantly its people. This move will allow Amy to spend more of her time focused on those sustainability opportunities as well as other efforts within the Business Finance division.”
Since her arrival in 2010, Dvorak has implemented successful sustainability efforts including:
-
Salmon Safe certification
-
Strategic Energy Management program
-
City of Portland Sustainability at Work certification
-
Habitat enhancement project
-
Electric vehicle charging station installations
-
Solar panel installations
-
Composting toilet installation
-
Improved alternative transportation resources and incentives
In April 2015, the Princeton Review recognized Lewis & Clark as the nation’s number one college in sustainability in its 2015–16 Guide to Green Colleges. While the Princeton Review takes into account a plethora of stats related to sustainability initiatives, the key to Lewis & Clark’s ranking was a student survey that found an exceptionally high level of support for environmental awareness and conservation.
“Because of the progress that’s been made within our operations, we can now turn our attention to the community,” Dvorak said. “The Office of Sustainability will focus on the broader vision of sustainability, developing additional community engagement opportunities, and increased student programming.”
