Spring Main Stage 2017: ANTIGONICK by Anne Carson

ANTIGONICK by Anne Carson is a “comic book” of Sophocles’ Antigone.  The play is printed in Anne Carson’s handwriting and interspersed with art by Bianca Stone depicting a surreal assortment of icy landscapes, domestic interiors, gothic houses, unraveling spools of thread, precarious staircases and drowning horses. Drawing inspiration both from the art work and Carson’s poetic style, the piece will use music, dance and contemporary storytelling techniques to unearth this 2000 year old story in an attempt to bring it back to life in an age that continues to underestimate the power of a woman’s voice.  The play has roles for 4-6 women and 3-5 men for a total of 9 roles.

Anne Carson, a poet influenced by authors as diverse as Sappho, Euripides, Emily Brontë, Gertrude Stein and Virginia Woolf, is known for innovative translations of ancient texts, poetry and classics scholarship.
