A mathematics research collaboration between Lewis & Clark and three other undergraduate institutions in northwest Oregon received a new grant of $513,069 from the National Science Foundation.

A mathematics research collaboration between Lewis & Clark and three other undergraduate institutions in northwest Oregon received a new grant of $513,069 from the National Science Foundation.

During the next three summers, 21 faculty members from Lewis & Clark, Linfield College, Willamette, and the University of Portland will conduct original research with undergraduates and high school teachers or community college instructors in emerging fields in math and computer science.

Each partner institution will host one research team per summer; teams include two faculty mentors, four undergraduate students, and one teacher. Student applicants are recruited nationwide, and teacher participants are recruited regionally.

The first Lewis & Clark faculty mentors are Associate Professor of Mathematics Yung-Pin Chen and Associate Professor of Computer Science Peter Drake, who will lead their team in a research project looking at the game of Go and statistical approaches to artificial intelligence.

Future faculty participants include Assistant Professor Paul Allen, Assistant Professor Naomi Cameron, and Professor Jens Mache.
