The participant concludes the course with a 3-5 page paper illustrating p lans for resolving a work dilemma and shares it at the end of the term. T he retreat and online reflections focus on practicing the generation of o pen and honest questions\, and the use the 12 Principles from The Art and Spirit of Leadership by Judy Brown. 2 CreditsEDAD 642 Courage to Lead fo r Democracy (Strand 4) This hybrid course begins with a retreat\, Leading for Sustainable Change\, a Courage to Lead retreat\, and includes online content and discussions with an opportunity for participants to explore the powerful practice of self-reflection and personal change related to s upporting democracy in schools. It offers a context for participants to e xplore the difficult dilemmas related to working with diverse students\, staff and community. Each member of the seminar group is responsible for the investigation of their leadership focusing on developing one or more of the five habits of the heart of democracy\, from Parker Palmer' book\, Healing the Heart of Democracy: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit. The participant prepares a case study and an overvie w document for the final seminar. 2 Credits About the FacilitatorsKevin Bacon is a seasoned educator who has has dedicated his life work to stude nt outcomes and community engagement. Prior to his appointment as Directo r of the Condordia 3 to PhD Collaborative\, Kevin served as principal of Boise-Eliot/Humboldt PK-12 school in northeast Portland. In addition\, he has over 32 years of educational experience working in all sectors of th e city with every community and student demographic. He has been a teache r\, student management specialist\, biotech education coordinator\, vice principal\, principal and facilitator of Courage to Lead\, a professional development series for school administrators. Over the years\, by buildi ng partnerships and focusing on the collective impact of the students and community\, Kevin has ensured that his schools have had a healthy balanc e of support for whole-child development and health. Kevin has a wife and three children and loves spending his leisure time golfing and enjoying sports.Sherri CarrekerSherri has served 44 years in public education Pre- K through 12. Her roles varied from teacher\, instructional coach\, assis tant principal\, principal to professional development consultant. In add ition to her public school experience\, she worked within the Teacher Edu cation Department\, chaired the Educational Leadership Department\, and d irected the Center for Community Engagement at the Graduate School of Edu cation and Counseling at Lewis & Clark College.
