Conducted as a seminar\, the course \;is an overview primer of mental health i ssues \;affecting children and adolescents (for example\, \;depre ssion\, anxiety\, self mutilating behavior\, \;PTSD). Clinical issue s will be discussed in terms \;of etiological factors\, symptomotolog y\, \;biopsychosocial factors\, treatment issues\, and \;cultural and diversity perspectives. The use and \;limitations of the DSM-IV diagnostic system will \;be addressed. The school counselor's role in \;referral and long term treatment for clinical \;issues will be addressed in the context of the \;ASCA National Model. She has experienc e as a counselor in schools at all grade levels and with various school-b ased programs\, including work with teen parents and at-risk students. Sh e has completed internships at Columbia University and UC Santa Barbara a nd is active in several professional organizations. She has also conducte d research in schools with a focus on academic resiliency and collaborati ve school relationships. Her favorite aspect of her role as a faculty mem ber is mentoring students and providing a stimulating and inclusive place to learn.
