Shredded, Chiseled, & Swole: Understanding and Addressing Men’s Body Image Concerns

Date: 9:00am - 4:00pm PDT October 17 Location: Lewis & Clark Graduate School, South Chapel

Lewis & Clark Graduate School, South Chapel

Body image dissatisfaction has traditionally been thought to be a “woman’s problem.” As a result, men have often been ignored in research surrounding body image problems and it’s treatment.

Despite this oversight, growing evidence suggests that men also suffer body image concerns, and such concerns are on the rise. The increase in body image issues in boys and men directly corresponds to cultural and media changes during the past three decades.

Given these changes, mental health professionals need to become knowledgeable and skillful in addressing body image concerns in potential clients, as well as learning how they can construct outreach and/or prevention programming where appropriate.

This workshop will introduce participants to men’s body image concerns, factors that contribute toward it’s development, and how to address it in practice.

Following this workshop, participants will:

  • Have a foundational understanding of boys’ and men’s body image and body image concerns
  • Understand how sociocultural and psychological factors contribute toward body image concerns
  • Possess a number of creative interventions to help clients with body image concerns
  • Understand how to address men’s body image concerns from an outreach or prevention programming approach in various contexts (community, schools, workplace, etc.)

This workshop may meet the OBLPCT Cultural Competence Continuing Education requirement. Click here for more information
