[Online] Gender Diversity in Children & Youth: Inclusive & Affirming Care in Schools

Date: 9:00am PDT May 9 Location: Online

This interactive online workshop for educators, school counselors, volunteers and other school personnel will focus on how we can work toward creating inclusive and affirming classroom and school environments for gender nonconforming, gender diverse and transgender students in K-12 schools. Workshop content will be informed by presenter Jenn Burleton’s more than 10 years of gender diversity-specific interaction with students and schools.

Content and activities will include breakout discussion groups, video, and specific guidance on discussing gender identity and expression with elementary school students, how to best explain gender transition to students and parents, and the use of non-binary inclusive teaching tools for biology, history, and diversity curriculums.

Read a Q&A with presenter Jenn Burleton on why this workshop content should be essential learning for all educators

Content will also include guidance on federal Title IX protections, and navigating situations in which transgender, nonbinary and gender diverse students are “out” at school, but not “out” in their home and residential environments.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be better prepared to:

  • Differentiate aspects of gender and sexual diversity – identity/expression/sexual orientation
  • Understand age-related developmental challenges that transgender students face
  • Model inclusive language, support for gender diverse students and how to address gender-based bullying
  • Engage parents & caregivers in discussion about a student’s gender diversity
  • Assess curriculum, lesson plans and classroom activities for gender inclusivity
  • Differentiate fact-based information and guidance from those driven by intolerant ideology
