Striving Readers: Increasing the Rate of Progress Through Engagement and Strategic Coaching

This hybrid course is designed for K-12 classroom teachers and literacy/curriculum specialists interested in increasing the rate of progress for our most tangled readers.
In this course, educators will:
- Explore strategies for engaging striving readers
- Learn how to conduct informal, formative assessments to study striving readers’ habits and use this knowledge to sharpen coaching and conferring skills
- Develop a framework to ensure that the essential core classroom practices are in place to support striving readers
- Learn criteria for effective small group and intervention reading instruction
- Design, collect and build tools to support reading outside of the classroom walls
Participants will walk away with action plans for classroom and school wide change.
This hybrid course will meet in person two days, with online work completed in between.
Required text: From Striving to Thriving: How to Grow Confident, by Stephanie Harvey. Participants are asked to read the first chapter before the first class meeting.

Noncredit: $250, includes 15 PDUs or Washington Clock Hours, $100 student rate. Lewis & Clark Alumni save 20%
Graduate Continuing education credit: CEED-876, 1 semester hour, $350

About the Instructor
Jennifer Burkart is currently an Instructional Specialist in the Beaverton Public School District as well as an adjunct professor for both the Reading Endorsement and Special Education programs at Lewis and Clark College. In her work, she coordinates curriculum, develops and monitors assessment practices, coaches educators in best practices for classroom instruction, designs staff development experiences and specializes in effective individual reading interventions as well as school-wide action plans for our most tangled readers and writers.
