Disrupting the Cycle of Toxic Masculinity

In this course for educators, participants will analyze the effects of toxic masculinity and how they play out in our classrooms, communities, and lives.
Through personal narratives and critical analysis, participants will reflect on the artifacts, people, and moments that defined “masculinity” for them and examine how those definitions manifest themselves in our work. Participants will then create lessons that help disrupt the cycle of toxic masculinity present in our society.
Together, we will create a definition for Toxic Masculinity Education, based on the workshops, lectures, and discussions within the class.
Each participant will develop a lesson plan based on an idea or strategy presented during sessions, and will return to their classrooms with strategies to combat toxic masculinity.

The Oregon Writing Project (OWP) is a collaboration program between Lewis & Clark and metropolitan or rural area schools and districts, and offers programs designed to improve the writing of Oregon’s K-12 students and teachers.

About the Instructors
Jayme Causey, MEd, is in his third year of teaching and currently teaches Freshmen English and College Writing at Jefferson High School. Jayme, an Oregon Writing Project coach, enjoys seeing the growth of students from their freshman to senior years, both in their writing and as humans in general. His passion for writing and its potential for re-examining the world are the driving force of his work, professionally and personally.
Chris Kelly, MAT, teaches English at David Douglas High School. Most of his free time is filled with coaching and a career in the Oregon Army National Guard. He leads a club of young men on campus called My Brother’s Keeper, a peer mentoring and support network. He is passionate about injecting Hip-Hop into the traditional high school curriculum and providing an environment where all students feel their voices are valued.
