Mind Body Connections in the Treatment of Eating Disorders

This course will explore the use usage of somatic approaches—including yoga, somatic therapies, and mindfulness—in the treatment of eating disorders. Participants will explore improving body image, embodied experience, introspective awareness, and the ability to identify, feel, and regulate emotions - all critical components in the treatment of eating disorders and negative body image.

Together, we will also look at eating disordered behavior, and the relationship of those impacted through their bodies with an interpersonal neurobiology lense.

This course is part of our Eating Disorders Certificate Program.

Date and Time: Saturday-Sunday, June 23-24, and Sunday, July 1, 2018, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

About the Instructor

Sarah Alexander received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1995 with a double major in Psychology and Women’s Studies. She began practicing full-time as a therapist in 2001, and received her Master of Social Work degree from Portland State University in 2005. She has been been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the state of Oregon since 2008, working in community mental health settings for substance abuse, partial hospitalization intensive day-treatment setting for eating disorders, and university counseling centers. She has served on the Board for the Columbia River Eating Disorder Network since 2015 and runs a private practice in the Beaverton-area.
