This course for educators at all grade levels will introduce participants to critical race theory, differentiating between equality and equity, and understanding systemic racism.  Participants will explore their own belief systems and the assumptions they hold about educating children of color, and will reflect on the degree to which they have internalized the values and norms held by the dominant culture, and ways in which that is brought into their teaching.

The learning objectives of this course are to:

  • Know the difference between equality and equity
  • Learn to identify racial microaggressions and detours
  • Understand the importance of engaging in culturally relevant pedagogy
  • Identify the role that privilege and entitlement play in one’s life
  • Practice interrupting systemic racism as well as colleagues who perpetuate systemic racism
  • Understand how the tenets of critical race theory manifest in daily practice

This course is particularly important for White individuals so that they can begin to identify the role that White Privilege plays in their life and what they can do to decenter Whiteness.
