Convocation: A call to assemble, to reflect on the ways our core values—creativity, compassion, commitment—impact and sustain our professional lives. An opportunity for students and faculty to connect across programs and to reflect on the shared values of each of our disciplines.

The Convocation is an opportunity for GSEC students and faculty to connect across programs and to reflect on the shared values of each of our disciplines. First year GSEC students are required to attend and register on-line for one workshop.

Our goals for the Convocation and workshops are:

1) To educate about a social justice issue that relates to multiple GSEC professions
2) To engage students from all programs to explore relevant topics related to social justice
3) To develop an awareness of implications for practice
4) To foster cross-program dialogue and understanding of the challenges of various professions

Schedule

Friday, September 30th 2016, 4:00 to 7:00 pm
South Campus Chapel, on the graduate campus

3:45-4:00 Arrival and sign in

• Arrive and register in the designated room for your workshop in Rogers Hall and York Hall

4:00-5:45 Convocation Workshops

• Introductions, overview of topic, background information
• Discussions/activities in pairs/small groups/large group
• “Art in Action” project: Workshop participants are invited to use oil pastels on a 5 1/2” square of paper to express a word, phrase or image gleaned from the workshop that reflects a value to be held moving forward into the year. These images will then be pasted together in a frame that will then be used to enliven the walls of our classrooms.

6:00-7:00 Gathering and meal

• Welcoming remarks by Dean Fletcher, introductions of programs, and GSEC student groups (South Campus Chapel)
• Food, Beverages, and Music (York Hall)

Who is required to attend Convocation?

Convocation is required for all students enrolled the following programs:

• Any MAT program
• MEd in Educational Studies
• MEd in School Counseling
• Ed.S. in School Psychology
• MA in Professional Mental Health Counseling
• MA in Professional Mental Health Counseling—Specialization in Addictions
• MA in Marriage, Couple, and Family Therapy
• MA in Student Affairs Administration

Convocation is not required for students in the following programs, but may be taken optionally and counted toward the two-unit core experience requirement:

• MEd in Curriculum and Instruction
• MEd in Special Education
• MEd with Initial Administrator License
