Ecoscapes: Costa Rica

  • News Image

Trip dates: Tentative July 23-August 9, 2010

Experience the tropical landscapes of Costa Rica, learning to appreciate its diversity through the perspective of the Costa Rican people. Compare and contrast the natural history, culture, and approaches to conservation of Costa Rica to Oregon’s. Journey from ocean shores and mangrove swamps across volcanic mountain ranges to contrasting forest habitats, staying at field stations and witnessing community-level conservation efforts. Observe commercial agriculture, meet families through home stays, and learn to think of biodiversity itself as communal property essential to sustainable economic practices and the equitable distribution of wealth. Find opportunities to immerse yourself in Spanish language.

Information

Greetings,

We can accommodate up to 18 as we kayak through mangroves, join watershed restoration work, hike tropical forest trails, and learn about Costa Rican family life. There is still lots of space available!

The Fall Semester Information Session will be on Thursday, October 28th, 2010 at 4:30-6:30pm. Rogers Hall, Room 108. It’s certainly not too late to inquire! Please contact me to learn more.

Our program in Costa Rica is hosted by the Municipality of San Isidro and Project Campanario on the La Osa Penninsula. We divide our time between host families and field stations, with a two-day visit to the Boruca Indigenous Reserve. Departure on July 18; return on August 4. In the field, we are typically joined by a number of Costa Ricans, with classes held in both Spanish and English. Fluency in Spanish, however, is not a requirement for participation.

If interested, please email me directly and I will keep you up to date.

Pura vida,
Kip Ault

Scholarships

PrISM

Teachers holding Oregon licenses may register to earn credits toward a PrISM certificate (Preparation for Instruction of Science and Math, a 7 university consortium). To qualify for the PrISM tuition rate (approximately a $100/credit discount) you must register for the SCI or SS credit. Earning CORE credit requires payment of the full tuition.

In Addition, PrISM offers 40%-60% scholarships covering both the tuition and course fee (but not airfare) to qualifying, experienced teachers.

To register as a PrISM teacher and learn how to apply for a scholarship click here, then click on ‘tuition assistance.’

Continuing Education/Professional Development Units

Lewis & Clark is pleased to offer participation in Ecoscapes: Costa Rica at a much reduced tuition rate to persons who do not wish to earn credit towards a degree. However, this reduced rate does not match the PrISM tuition assistance plan. For a non-teaching family member, spouse, friend or out-of-state teacher seeking Professional Development units but not degree credit, the tuition reduces to: TBA. Keep in mind there is also the cost in additions to this reduced tuition, which is the course fee and airfare.
