Asperger’s Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism: Practical  Interventions for a Complex Population

Students and adults with asperger’s and high functioning autism often have so many needs that it is difficult for a single clinician to provide all of their care. For this reason, it is important for all clinicians either in school districts, in colleges, agencies, or in the community to understand the full complexity of what it takes to assist asperger’s or other autistic spectrum individuals with being as high functioning as possible in the community.

Learn about the sub groups within the autistic spectrum and how best to serve each group’s needs. Learn to be watchful for communication, social expectations, and other problems that can complicate the effectiveness of traditional psychotherapy. Learn simple modifications to typical techniques to improve effectiveness with asperger’s individuals. Learn from real life examples about how community coordination improves the lives of clients.

Goals:

  1. Participants will learn to view asperger’s and autistic spectrum clients from a comprehensive care perspective.
  2. Participants will learn about the sub groups within the asperger’s and high functioning autistic spectrum and treatment planning for each group.
  3. Participants will learn about the need to coordinate other types of professionals to more fully support autistic spectrum clients.
  4. Participants will learn ways to modify common psychotherapy techniques to better serve asperger’s and high functioning autistic clients.
