The STAR Autism Program: Strategies for Teaching Based on Autism Research

Date: June 17 8:00am - June 20 4:00pm Location: York Graduate Center - Room 121, Graduate Campus

Learn to use evidence-based applied behavioral analysis (ABA) strategies in your school program. The ABA instructional methods of discrete trial training, pivotal response training, and functional routines form the instructional base of this comprehensive program for children with autism.

The curriculum content areas include:

• Expressive language

• Receptive language

• Spontaneous language

• Functional routines

• Pre-academic skills

• Social interaction and play skills

This course will provide students with techniques needed to teach children with autism using the applied behavioral analysis instructional techniques. Degree-applicable credit: SPED 589, 2 semester hours, $1,608

About the Instructors

Joel Arick, Ph.D. is the lead author of the STAR Autism Program. Dr. Arick has 30 years of experience working in the field of autism. He is currently assisting the state of Oregon to develop a network of school-based training sites for children with autism in Elementary and Middle School age levels.

Sheila Magee, M.S. is a School Psychologist and School Administrator. Sheila has worked with children with autism for over 20 years. Sheila has coordinated programs for children with autism at both the pre-school and school-age level. She has expertise in analysis of behavior and implementation of positive behavior support strategies.
