On OPB: Schools that Change Communities
Date: January 6 2013 8:00pm Location: OPB
Tune in to OPB plus on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 8 pm to watch “Schools that Change Communities”, a documentary about schools around the country that are bringing students out of the classroom and into the community, featuring interviews with graduate school faculty member Greg Smith.
Smith’s research focuses on “place-based education”—the practice of educating students in the context of their communities and places, integrating learning into the world students live in. Smith has worked closely with local schools and districts to integrate this approach to learning.
The film profiles five schools in five states that use the place-based education approach. Kennedy Alternative High School in Cottage Grove Oregon will be among five schools featured. At Kennedy Alternative High School students spend much of their time outside classroom walls helping Cottage Grove develop a sustainable environment.
