Engaging Boys: Educational Strategies That Play to Boys’ Strengths

Many aspects of schools are not sympathetic to boys’ relational and learning styles. This workshop will examine the data on how boys are doing in schools, review boys’ unique developmental issues, and share strategies for utilizing literary strategies that tend to work for boys including managing elements of violence and humor in boys’ writing.

Instructor: Howard Hiton, M.S., LPC
About the Instructor
Howard Hiton is a Licensed Professional Counselor. He has been providing individual, family, and chemical dependency counseling services since 1987 in settings such as residential treatment for adjudicated boys, middle schools and high schools. He was the recipient of the Oregon Pediatric Society’s 1999 Award for Service to Children and the 2005 Oregon Peacemaker Award of Excellence for his support of youth.
Howard has been in private practice with a passion for boy’s issues since 1995. He has conducted focus groups with boys, facilitated young men’s support groups, led boys’ nights out and spoken to parent and professional audiences across the region on how to best nurture boys. He is the author of Building on Strengths, a report published by Portland Public Schools on improving boys’ school performance and a co-author of BAM! Boys Advocacy and Mentoring: Helping Boys Connect Through Physical Challenge and Strategic Storytelling, a Guidebook for Leading Boys Groups. Howard’s presentation style is consistently evaluated as being warm, engaging, and thought provoking. He is the father of two school aged boys.
