Fire Mountain School is an independent alternative school located at the northern edge of Oswald West State Park and adjacent to Cape Falcon Marine Preserve. Children go on nature hikes through the adjoining old-growth forests and to the beach from the school’s back door. This unique setting provides the opportunity for children to become connected with their environment. We are dedicated to assisting children in their ongoing work of exploring and making sense of the world. Since 1983, teachers and parents have joined together to create a community structure within which children experience discovery, challenge, experimentation, risk, failure and mastery.
*Value the importance of experiential place based learning, childhood play, cultivating creativity and being part of a vibrant learning community.
*Proven record of teaching diverse set of students in this age range, with skills and examples of curricula and methods that promote child led learning and progress.
*Self-starter, energetic, organized, innovative, skilled in communication and optimistic in attitude towards children.
*Comfortable being outside in a forest setting teaching through experience and play.
*Cooperate with teachers, parents, volunteers and community members in a spirit of respectful collaboration that serves as a model to students and the wider community.
*Inclusive and team-oriented when working on school-wide (with the younger class, etc.) activities and projects.
*Flexibility and enthusiasm to problem solve and partner with others in our dynamic, child focused and community oriented environment.
*Education degree or equivalent experience.
*Experience with music, art and foreign language a plus.
*Must be a local resident minimum 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the 2017 school year (mid-August)
*First Aid and CPR certified.
*Excellent licensed and insured driver with clean Motor Vehicles Record.
*Class size limited to 12 to ensure individual attention and support the teacher’s flexibility to adapt curriculum to the best advantage of the class makeup and learning progress.

Compensation range for this position is $32,000 to $38,000 depending on experience and qualifications for the school year payable over a 10 month period, from September to June. Class meets Mondays through Fridays from 8:30am to 2:30pm. Teacher hours are 8am to 3pm.
