Full-Time Preschool Co-Head Teacher

ABOUT US:

Friendly House is a nonprofit neighborhood center and social service organization that promotes the interdependence of people from all walks of life to meet educational, recreational and human-service needs in the Portland Metropolitan area. Friendly House creates opportunities for people of all income and age groups to increase social capital. We operate three major programs in Northwest Portland: Community Recreation & Education, Community Services and our Children’s Programs. Friendly House Preschool is one of our oldest programs at Friendly House, dating back to the 1930s. It is deeply rooted in and respected by the community. We provide a half-day, educational experience for a diverse group of children, ages 3-5. We believe that children need an individualized early childhood education program to grow socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically. We have a strong inclusion policy and support children with a variety of learning needs. Friendly House Preschool is funded by three main sources: tuition (which we charge on a sliding based on family income), the Oregon Prekindergarten Program (Head Start), and the Portland Children’s Levy.

SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The Co-Head Teacher works closely with the preschool team to support all areas of the program, including curriculum development and implementation, student assessment, family communication, coordination of services, documentation, and recruitment and enrollment. The Co-Head Teachers are responsible for creating and maintaining a warm, child-centered, welcoming environment for students, families, and visitors. This is a full-time, year-round position which includes the preschool school-year program and the preschool summer kindergarten readiness program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Associate’s and coursework equivalent in a major related to Early Childhood Education as defined by the Oregon Registry. • Two years of experience teaching 3-5 year old children in an early childhood education setting; • Enrolled in the criminal history registry • Home visiting or other direct experience working with parents is highly desired. • Experience with Teaching Strategies Gold • Experience with PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of general principles and best practices of ECE • Anti-bias curriculum, developmentally appropriate for preschoolers • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Good organizational skills • Ability to work as a team player • Be culturally responsive.

COMPENSATION:

Our compensation package is designed to provide a living wage, improve your skills and support your health and well-being. Starting salary is $29,952 and includes medical, dental, and retirement benefits as well as paid vacation, sick, and holiday time after a successful evaluation period. This is a 1.0 FTE, exempt position.
