AVID Volunteer Tutors needed in the Beaverton School District

Want to help change the lives of students in a college readiness system focused on social justice?

AVID TUTORS: Tutors are key to the success of the AVID program. Tutors are trained to use specific teaching methodologies and materials to facilitate effective tutorial groups. Tutors work with AVID students in study groups and individually, assisting them in all academic areas to make progress commensurate with college expectations. Tutoring in AVID is different from any volunteer position you have held before. Being part of a program at the forefront of education is highly challenging and requires extraordinary commitment, yet its rewards are many. More than anything else, tutoring in AVID is the best preparation possible for a career in teaching or in any other people oriented job.

AVID tutors assist the students achieve their full potential by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups. Tutors use Socratic questioning and collaborative learning techniques to help the students come up with the answers to their questions on their own and by working with fellow students.

We are in need of tutors on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 60-90 minutes during the school day (9:00am-4:00pm). School placement will vary depending on the school tutorial schedule and volunteer availability. Time slots vary by school. Volunteers can choose Tuesday or Thursday if they cannot commit to both days per week.

You do not need to be an expert in a content area to be a great tutor! Your main role is to help support a student lead tutorial group. Six hours of training is provided before placement along with coaching and support throughout the year.
