Letter to the editor: PPS teachers fight for quality schools

OWP Participant and Teacher Elizabeth Thiel writes to the Oregonian about school quality.

After years of cuts, and despite estimated reserves of more than $16 million, Portland Public Schools is asking the community to accept the continued deterioration of our public school system.

The district’s position seems to be that further increase in teacher workload; erosion of compensation; inequity in school offerings; and a deficit of electives, special education teachers and wraparound services are inevitable. 

Portland teachers disagree.
