Oregon Writing Project Awarded Oregon Arts Commission Grant
January 08, 2013
The Oregon Arts Commission recently announced 23 community arts grant awards in its Arts Build Communities (ABC) grant program.
Now in its 17th year, the ABC program has become nationally recognized for its power to create meaningful, collaborative projects that broaden the impact of the arts in communities and foster community arts partnerships.
The Oregon Writing Project (OWP) was awarded $5,600 to support SlamBoo, a contest designed to unite students from rural, urban, and suburban Oregon around slam poetry. Four OWP Teacher Consultants and aspiring high school slam poets will provide instruction at four geographically and culturally diverse middle schools.
Participants will collaborate, compete, and share a common meal as they cross boundaries of geography, race, and class, while cultivating empathy and new friendships.
The participating Teacher Consultants are Bryan Chu of Lane Middle School, Kristen McMurtry of Five Oaks Middle School, Charles Sanderson of St. Helen’s Middle School, and Shannon Wasson of da Vinci Middle School.
Stay tuned for a SlamBoo poetry evening with these teachers and their students in late April.
