Without grounding in the issues and nee
ds of our contemporary communities\, higher education will merely serve t
o perpetuate patterns of colonization\, isolation\, and appropriation tha
t alienate students and disrupt communities.
An approach tha
t goes beyond typical college preparation coursework and fosters critical
thinking around the issues present in marginalized communities is requir
ed to fully understand and address the barriers to higher education achie
vement members of these communities face.
Participants in th
is workshop will explore the IWOK Summer Academy\, a project of the Ind
igenous Ways of Knowing program at Lewis &\; Clark\, as a model pr
ogram that has successfully increased higher education access and achieve
ment for students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
In our exploration\, we will discuss what applying this empower
ment model might look and feel like for all communities\, and how educato
rs\, administrators\, counselors\, and parents can contribute to higher e
ducation achievement for all students\, including being able to articulat
e and address the emergent needs of all of the communities we serve.

Take a step back and look at what you do. If you are a teacher\, yo ur writing is your teacher. If you are a counselor\, your writing is your counselor. If you are a parent\, a veteran\, a student\, friend\, citize n—writing can be a way to understand the past\, engage the present\, an d prepare for the future. \;
Writing can help us c ome into alignment with reality\, with "hap\," what happens. This\, not e xternal "success\," can be the foundation for professional effectiveness and a satisfying life. In this workshop we will consider the kinds of wri ting we need to do\, explore the kinds of writing we want to do\, and pra ctice discovering how the two might become one. \;
Writing something every day can be a way to settle your accounts\, find common ground with your perceived opponents\, come to terms with nagging sorrows\, and find "concentric peace"—that settled quality of character than enables an individual to help others.
As William Stafford said\, "I must be willingly fallible to deserve a place in the realm where miracles happen." We will explore a suite of ways the writer can be fallible—young\, bravely naїve\, open\, forgiving—in order to engage this realm of discovery and surprise.
Th is workshop is free and open to the public however space is limited and a dvance registration is required. \;

Geoffrey Donovan has quantified a wide range of urban-tr ee benefits. These have ranged from intuitive benefits—reduced summerti me cooling costs\, for example—to less intuitive such as crime reductio n. More recently\, he has focused on the relationship between trees and p ublic health. He found that mothers with trees around their homes are les s likely to have underweight babies\, and when trees are killed by an inv asive pest\, more people die from cardiovascular and lower-respiratory di sease. He has a number of ongoing projects including a collaboration with the women's health initiative.

When his work with new light rail was completed\, Greg founded Justic e for All\, a training and consulting firm focused on public outreach\, c ommunity involvement\, and environmental justice. Greg currently works fo r the City of Portland\, where he has managed a citywide small businesses marketing and outreach program\, as well as training and development for city employees. In mental health today the integration of medications with psychotherapy is common. Your clients and students ar e often on a variety of medications ranging from stimulants to antipsycho tics. It is also increasingly common that children\, as well as adults\, will be on multiple medications during the course of their treatment.
It is important for you to be familiar with this critical interventi on tool and its impact on the treatment process. Moreover\, it is importa nt to understand the multiple factors that prescribers consider when dete rmining a medication strategy.
This workshop will provide an unde rstanding of the medications\, their role in treatment and an understandi ng of the medical prescriber.
Material covered will include basic biological elements\, the major categories of psychotropic medications\, environmental factors impacting the prescribing process and the importan ce of collaboration. The emphasis will be on application through the use of case examples and discussion. Participants will be encouraged to bring examples and questions from their own work.
Who should att end?
This workshop is designed for the non-medically tra ined mental health and school professional\, but RN's\, LPN's and Medical Assistants will also find it useful.

As a collector of historic newspapers\, the Hamm has accumulated more than 150 newspapers that show the development of Or egon between those 100 years. Not all writers during those years were ent husiastic about people traveling so far from civilization\, and The New Y ork Times was very much against statehood. How close a vote was it in Con gress to admit Oregon into the Union in 1859?
Robert Hamm\, a nat ive Oregonian\, earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Lewis &am p\; Clark College. He taught high school English at Lakeridge\, Aloha\, a nd West Linn high schools and college composition courses at Clackamas Co mmunity College. After retiring from the West Linn-Wilsonville School Dis trict as Director of Human Resources\, he headed up the teacher-preparati on program at the Oregon Campus of the University of Phoenix. In the late 1980s he found a map of Oregon and Nebraska sharing a common border (185 3)\, and he began to collect old maps and old newspapers. He first gave p resentations on these topics through the Chautauqua Scholars program by t he Oregon Council for the Humanities.

We tend to have specific ways we define "good" communication and conflict resolution (e.g.\, "I feel" statements \, direct processing\, assertive communication). However\, if we do not i ncorporate intercultural communication (IC) concepts\, unintentional misu nderstandings may occur with the people we work with and in our relations hips.
We cannot always assume our standards are universal or righ t. Increasing our ability to navigate our differences allows us to truly connect with others. These types of skills are critical for real cultural competency and effectiveness in our work.
Much of what is taught in graduate diversity classes stems from social justice and multicultura l traditions. The intercultural perspective is complimentary\; where the other traditions tend to focus more on the individual or group characteri stics in isolation\, the intercultural perspective focuses on the interac tion. \;
As therapists\, counselors\, and educators\, IC allo ws us to greatly expand our skills\, and go beyond empathy\, understandin g\, and "do's &\; don'ts" type interventions. Intercultural communicat ion concepts impact how and when we talk about diversity issues\, how we build relationships\, problem-solve\, resolve conflicts\, conduct a menta l health intake assessment\, sequence certain areas of learning\, and exh ibit culturally-appropriate empathy.

training\, \;"Talking About Race and Racism: A Developmental and Inte
grative Approach."
This workshop will review key intercultural communication theories and concepts\, and how to apply the m in communication between adults. The concepts presented still apply in communication with children\, however specific applications with children will not be discussed in the workshop. The importance of integrating int ercultural communication work with social justice perspectives will also be emphasized.

leadership in schools\, clinics\, nonprofits and other organizational set
