Teaching essay writing to students can be a tug-of-war between prescription and freedom. How much instruction do students need? How much do we scaffold instruction so that students can write a coherent essay? When does scaffolding become prescriptive and formulaic?

This is an inquiry course for teachers of students in grades 6-12 who struggle with essay writing. Participants in the course will investigate essay writingfrom generation to revision and editingby participating in writing workshops themselves.
