Choice Reading: Connecting Kids with the Right Book at the Right Time

This hybrid course is for educators looking to explore strategies for engaging students in learning about their interests as readers, and encouraging them to develop a reading life.

Throughout the course, participants will exponentially grow their knowledge of current children’s authors, series, and genres, including discussion with librarians and book store owners on ways to best navigate the world of ‘kid literature’.

Educators will design, collect and build tools to help find the right book for the right kid at the right time. Participants will walk away with updated knowledge of the vast array of engaging authors and genres that will hook students and help toward installing a lifelong love of reading.

This course will require an independent component to be completed between the two in-class meeting dates. This will include reading current young adult and children’s literature, and piloting the tools and resources learned after the first class on a current student. A written account of their learning will be assigned.

About the Instructor

Jennifer Kempf-Burkart is an Instructional Specialist in the Beaverton Public School District as well as an adjunct professor for both the Reading Endorsement and Special Education programs at Lewis and Clark College. In her work, she coordinates curriculum, develops and monitors assessment practices, coaches educators in best practices for classroom instruction, delivers staff development and specializes in designing individual reading interventions as well as schoolwide action plans for our most tangled readers and writers.
