Pathways to Best Practice Using the Common Core

This course offers teachers time to explore and further their understanding of the Common Core standards as well as the instructional shifts toward best practice teaching. 

Participants will explore strategies for how to engage students in close reading of texts and subsequent meaningful conversations with peers. 

Course content will prepare teachers with strategies for maintaining a student-centered classroom, while infusing the Common Core shifts into classroom practice.

Participants will also learn to design lesson plans that actively engage students and effectively utilize the framing offered through Common Core.

About the Instructors

Jennifer Burkart, M.Ed. is currently an Instructional Specialist in the Beaverton Public School District as well as an adjunct professor for both the Reading Endorsement and Special Education programs at Lewis & Clark College. In her work, she coordinates curriculum, develops and monitors assessment practices, coaches educators in best practices for classroom instruction, delivers staff development and specializes in designing individual reading interventions as well as school-wide action plans for our most tangled readers and writers.

Sarah Dunkin, M.A.T. is currently a 1st grade teacher and Title I Staff Development Coordinator for the Beaverton School District. Sarah has her MAT and Reading Endorsement from Lewis & Clark College and continues to teach in the Reading Endorsement program at Lewis & Clark College.  In addition to teaching students of all ages and levels, Sarah loves to adventure outside with her family.
