White Water Institute: Using Lessons from the River to Create Adaptive, Resilient, and Sustainable Organizations

This course offered by the White Water Institute invites educators and community members to the Deschutes River to enter into dialogue about significant changes needed in our organizations, businesses and communities.

The controlled mechanistic systems, in which most organizations operate today aren’t nimble enough to meet today’s complex challenges. New professional and relational skills are needed.  Skills learned from living systems like adaptive leadership, interdependence, pattern awareness, and new organizational strategies like self-organization and emergence – provide guidance for these tough issues.

Participants in this course will explore how natural systems provide the tools, strategies, and language for viewing engagement processes in a different way, establishing renewed capacity for change.

As a rafting team, we will practice interdependence, letting go of control, and being fully engaged in the present moment. In the classroom, we will translate our experience on the river into a toolkit of living system concepts and organizational and communication strategies that can be directly applied to the workplace or communities.

NOTE: Those registering for continuing education credit must complete and return this release form to the Center for Community Engagement at Lewis & Clark.

Participation in the Institute alone provides 2 semester hours of instruction. Participants seeking 3 semester hours will meet at Lewis & Clark after the Institute for the additional instruction time. 

About the Instructors

Marilyn Lane, Ph.D. is Executive Director of the White Water Institute. Her career includes serving as assistant superintendent – instructional services, curriculum director, principal, state policy, teacher, and small business owner. Her passions include learning lessons from the river, community-wide learning initiatives, adventure, connecting with friends, journaling, and bicycling.

Kathy Leslie, M.M.S. is the White Water Institute Board President. She is also President of Leslie Consulting and Associates, and adjunct professor of communication engagement strategies at the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling. Kathy is currently writing a book titled The Politics of Authentic Engagement. Kathy’s professional background includes teaching, consulting and serving as an executive administrator. Her passions include friends, work, and family, building strong connected communities, travel, water, golf, and learning.

Sylvia Soholt, M.B.A. is a White Water Institute board member and consultant with Sylvia Soholt Strategic Communications, and owner of Sylvan Sanctuary, a retreat for renewal and creativity. Sylvia’s career includes work as a journalist, foreign correspondent, finance analyst, school district communications director, and project director for education communications. Sylvia’s passions include developing a healing garden, supporting personal and professional growth for others, art in every medium, and daily walks with dogs.

Larry Lockett is the Superintendent of the Jewel School District and a White Water Institute board member. His career includes thirty-five years of high school experience, fifteen as an instructor and twenty as an administrator. Larry’s passions include rafting, hiking, fishing, reading and watching high school sporting events.
