Digging In: Place-Based Food and Garden Education for Teachers

This course will prepare teachers to use school gardens as a learning environment while integrating food and garden lessons into their classroom curriculum. Participants will:
• Become familiar with inquiry-based approaches to integrating seasonal garden-based lessons
• Explore the connections between food, gardening and wellness
• Develop methods of incorporating critical thinking skills into classroom discussions about food, gardening, and health issues
• Learn how to collaborate with school kitchens
• Learn basic gardening practices
• Develop an understanding of available community resources
Day 1 will focus on Place-based Learning, Day 2 on Inquiry-based Learning, and Day 3 will focus on Wellness. Workshop format will include lecture/discussion, field trips, collaborative group work, literacy-based activities, and unique lunch opportunities where practice supports theory. A variety of media will be used to provide information, including video and web-based resources.

Times: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday
Location: Days 1 and 2 will be at Lewis & Clark, day 3 will be off campus
Instructors: Linda Colwell, Sarah Sullivan, and Tim Hahn, M.Ed.
Continuing education credit: CEED 866, 1 semester hour, $350
Noncredit/CEU: 18 hours, $250

About the Instructors
Linda Colwell specializes in School Garden Education and Farm to School programs for private and public schools. Linda created the Eat Think Grow curriculum in support of school- garden and place-based education. Her work includes The Abernethy School Kitchen Garden and the Abernethy Scratch Kitchen. She is a board member of Zenger Farm and a former member of the Portland Public Schools Wellness Advisory committee. Linda received her culinary training in France and works at Ayers Creek Farm in Gaston, Oregon.
Sarah Sullivan coordinates the School Kitchen Garden Program at Abernethy Elementary in SE Portland. She designs after school garden- and cooking-based programming and currently serves as an advisor to the Hawaii’s Island School Garden Network. Sarah came to Portland in 2007 from Hawaii where she taught organic farming and permaculture design to youth and adults and managed numerous farm-based educational centers. As former director of various non-profits addressing food security issues, Sarah has extensive experience in organizational management, seed saving, fundraising, community leadership, legislation and program evaluation.
Tim Hahn, M.Ed., grew up in the Midwest and received his Masters in Education at the University of Minnesota. After more than 30 years of elementary teaching, mostly in Portland Public Schools, he retired in 2005. During his final years in the classroom, Tim worked with students, parents, PSU graduate students and fellow teachers to establish a school garden program at Buckman School. Since his retirement, Tim has been active in promoting food and garden education through the Learning Gardens Lab, the Sauvie Island Center and the Learning Gardens Institute, an organization he is currently developing to support existing food and garden initiatives in Portland area schools.
